Boston Red Sox Month of April 2008 Games

Two games in March included.

The Month started out playing games in three countries, Japan, Canada, and US.

At Japan vs. Oakland Athletics 2 games;

First the March opener in Japan with the Sox splitting two games with Oakland. Brendon Moss hit his first MLB ninth inning game tying home run and Manny delivering a game winning double in the tenth inning.

At Oakland Athletics 2 games;

On to Oakland where the Sox took two. In the first game Matsasaka allowed one run and Youkilis went 3-4 scoring both Red Sox runs for their win.  In the second game Lester pitched a gem going 6 2-3 innings and not allowing a run. David Ortiz broke a 0-0 tie in the seventh against with a two run homer off ex-teammate Alan Embree. (I didn’t know Embree was still pitching).

At Toronto Blue Jays 3 games;

Disaster, fatigue, and travel caught up with them. The Blue Jays swept the Red Sox scoring 23 runs in three games. Not much to say about this terrible series. Sox pitching gave up 14 walks in 24 innings and were never really in any of the games.

Home Detroit Tigers 3 games;

Home sweet home against an 0-6 Detroit Tigers, Red Sox took two of three. In the first game Matsasaka pitched a strong 6 2-3 innings not allowing any runs, his walk count was high (five). Youkilis went 3-4 with three RBI’s. The second game Detroit won their first game of the season beating Lester who gave up five hits, four walks in 5 1-3 inning. In the third and final game the Red Sox bats came alive scoring twelve runs with two or more RBI’s from Ramirez, Youkilis, Drew, Crisp, and Casey.

Home New York Yankees 3 games;

Ah the series we’ve been waiting for a three game series with the damn Yankees. The first game was all Wang as he kept the the Boston Red Sox off balance allowing just two hits. The game was close 1-1 into the seventh inning when Giambi hit a home run and Yankees adding another. The second game was a classic between these two teams. Red Sox took a 1-0 lead only to have the Yankees come back and take a 2-1, Red Sox came back making it a 4-2 game. Here’s where the action started, in the seventh inning the Yankees closed the gap making it 4-3 Red Sox. In the eight inning Rodriguez came to the plate with two on two out to face Papelbon. They finally faced each other after a 2 hour and 11 minute delay. Papelbon stuck out Rodriguez on three pitches with the last a high heater. The final game Matsuzaka vs. Hughes, both pitchers struggled, Boston’s bullpen prevailed allowing one run in four innings. The Red Sox won 8-5.

At Cleveland Indians 2 Games;

Boston Red Sox took both games, the first was a come from behind win scoring three runs in the ninth for a 6-4 lead. In the ninth Bedroia tied the game with a sacrifice fly followed by a game winning two run homer by Manny. In the second game Jed Lowrie made his major league debate with three RBI’s. Jason Varitek broke a 3-3 tie with a pinch hit single. Boston Red Sox getting a 5-3 win.

At New York Yankees 2 Games;

Boston Red Sox took the first series at Boston two of three. Yankees took no prisoners in the first game winning 15-9. Both starters (Buchholtz vs. Wang) were out of the game by the fourth inning. Yankees had sixteen hits and Red Sox fourteen. The second game the Red jumped to a 7-0 lead winning 7-5. Manny Ramirez had another big game hitting his 494th and 495th home run passing Lou Gehrig and Fred McGriff for 24th place on the all time MLB home run list.

Home Texas Rangers 4 Games;

Red Sox swept all fours games scoring 30 runs. In the first game Ortiz hit a grand slam giving the Red Sox a 4-1 lead and they never looked back winning 11-3. The second game the Red Sox came from behind on an Ortiz single and a game winning home run by Manny. Lester had a tough start allowing ten hits and two walks in 6 1/3 inning. In the third game Red Sox had another come from behind win. Red Sox trailed 5-0 in the seventh inning scored two in the seventh and four in the eight. In the final game the Red Sox scored five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth for a 8-0 lead. Ortiz had two doubles, three RBI’s. Buchholz pitched a strong outing.

Home California Angels 3 Games;

The first game the Red Sox trailed 5-1 before rallying and winning 7-6. Jacoby Ellsbury had two solo homes and Youkilis had a much needed two run homer. Papelbon got his eight save. Red Sox have now won six in a row and ten of eleven games. In the second game Matsuzaka was scratched because of the flu. The Red Sox called upon Lester to pitch on three days rest. He lasted five innings giving up four runs. In a losing effort (L, 6-4) Ortiz hit a game tying two run homer. The Red Sox have sold out 400 consecutive home games. The Angels won the final game 7-5. Justin Masterson pitched his first MLB start and allowed one run in six innings leaving the game winning 3-1. But Red Sox’s relief could not hold the lead giving up six runs in three innings.

 At Tampa Bay Rays 3 Games

Red Sox lost a tough one in the eleventh inning 5-4, but had several chances in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh inning to score. Mike Timlin 2-3 of an inning took the loss. The second game Clay Buchholz pitched a one hitter into the eight inning before giving up a two run homer to Iwamura for he loss 2-1. The third game was not much better for the Red Sox getting shutout by James Shields 3-0. Beckett pitched a good game but the offence couldn’t get any runs for him. Three game sweep for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Home Toronto Blue Jays 3 Games

The first game was a pitchers duel between Lester and Hallladay. With Halladay still on the mound in the bottom of the ninth Kevin Youkilis singled home Ortiz for a 1-0 win. Papelbon pitched the ninth for the win.
